Winter Tour
Explore medieval Bergen with a museum historian at UNESCO Bryggen and Håkonshallen, see Fantoft Stave Church, then ride the Ulriken cable car for panoramic views. All tickets included.
Discover Bergen from above and below in one unforgettable day. In the Middle Ages, Bergen was the largest and busiest town in Scandinavia, a prosperous hub of international trade and a centre of royal power. This tour brings that story to life, then takes you to the top of the city's highest mountain.
Your Ulriken guide meets you outside the Tourist Information by the Fish Market, where your coach is waiting. You start with a scenic drive through the historic Nordnes peninsula, stopping for photos at Tollbodalmenningen overlooking the harbour.
At Bryggen, a historian from Bergen City Museum joins you for the medieval part of the day. Walk the narrow passageways of this UNESCO World Heritage wharf and learn how merchants, craftsmen and residents shaped the city. Then visit Bryggens Museum, built on the remains of medieval Bergen and home to thousands of objects from everyday life in the Middle Ages.
A short walk away lies Håkonshallen, the magnificent royal hall built by King Håkon Håkonsson around 1261. Step inside the hall where royal feasts and state ceremonies once took place.
Your Ulriken guide then takes over, and the coach heads to Gamle Haugen, the Royal Family's residence in Bergen. Stroll through the park by the lake. The house itself is not open to visitors.
Next is Fantoft Stave Church, built around 1150 in Fortun by the Sognefjord. It was saved from demolition and moved piece by piece to Bergen in 1883, then faithfully rebuilt after a fire in 1992. Admire its dark timbers and carved dragon heads from the outside, in a quiet pine forest.
The day ends on a high note, quite literally. Ride the Ulriken cable car up to 643 metres for sweeping views of the city, the fjords and the snow-dusted peaks beyond (although snow can of course not be guaranteed), with time to explore and take photos before heading back down.
Coach transport, expert guides, admission to Bryggens Museum and Håkonshallen, and cable car tickets are all included.
